The amazing students in Engineering are highly motivated with big dreams. They are incredibly diverse, and many are from abroad. They come from all over San Diego, but they choose to be at our school. These amazing and deserving students need a spark to ignite their interest in STEM! They are working hard to learn to design and program the next generation of robotic systems. Many students can already program in C++ or Java in addition to Arduino, RobotC, Python and other functional languages.
To really spark their interest in engineering, we need to take it to the next level in robotics.
With your help, we will turn these students into the robotic engineers our country needs to win the future.
My Project
All students start somewhere, but no two students start from the same place. This is true in every subject area , but especially in robotics. My goals is not to have one programmer in every group of four students, but to have thirty-six programmers in every class of thirty-six. Every student can learn to write code.
More than half of the students in my Principles of Engineering class will write their first line of code during our exploration of Robotics.
Some students start playing with LEGO products, quickly move on Minecraft and then on to coding their first Scratch video game or Arduino project. Other students do not have an early introduction to robotics in general and coding in particular. These students need an incentive to recognize the ease with which they will be successful.
The Sphero rolling robots are a fun and non-threatening way to introduce the basic concepts of programming, including flow of execution, conditional statements, and iteration to students who are reluctant because they don't yet realize how amazing they are going to be at programming. With your help we will achieve a 100% success rate for programming, and every student will learn to write code.
