My Students

I adore my students and the fact that 23 different languages are spoken at my school, which makes my community diverse and full of energy! Every day presents challenges and rewards that stretch beyond my imagination. My classroom is a dynamic, engaging and fun environment where my students and I work together to make reading and writing come alive.

We rely on a multi-sensory approach to learning and incorporate many disciplines of study piquing the interests of all students.

In that way, we ensure a safe and respectful classroom space.

My Project

Our school year kicks off with a fun and relatable unit in Realistic Fiction. This unit is typically a favorite among my students because they're able to read about people, places and events that resonate with them. Due to the severe lack of resources in our school library, the books funded from this project will be the primary source of Book Club reading books for my students (and in many cases, their sole source for independent reading as well). In Book Club, students will be grouped together by reading level or interest where they will come together several times a week to discuss what they've read. Topics of discussion will be based on our unit of study along with the particular skill we are focused on (theme, characterization, PLOT, etc...).

The books chosen for this project were chosen because each narrative contains a character, place or event that will touch my students on a personal level.

My hope is that they'll be able to connect with the text on a deeper level and walk away knowing that they are not alone.

Each student brings a unique perspective to the classroom and these books will help them generate new ideas that will carry over into their book discussions creating a collaborative and enriching discussion.
