My students need engaging novels that support in-depth reading and analysis for our book battle.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach sixth grade language arts at a Title 1 school in the beautiful city of Chicago. Working at a high poverty school has its challenges. Sometimes even the most common supplies, like books, are hard to come by.
My amazing students are passionate about many things including music, sports, and social media.
As a teacher and mentor, I want to help make reading another one of their passions. I am working hard to prepare my students to become active, purposeful readers. I feel that a “book battle” will help to foster a community of readers.
My Project
Students will compete in a team-based reading challenge using these books. They will read high-interest novels and work together to develop their own discussion questions. In a debate-style format, students will demonstrate their knowledge of literary elements as well as hone in on their speaking and listening skills.
This project will not only encourage students to read, it will also promote cooperative learning and good sportsmanship - skills necessary to become college and career ready.
The debate-style format will benefit the students in many ways including increasing confidence and poise, and improving rigorous critical thinking skills.
