This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the art teacher in a low-income/high poverty school. . My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, It is my mission that all my students will love art and see my classroom as a place they can be creative and have high quality art supplies. I wish to provide my students with rigorous and meaningful learning experiences.

My students are creative, clever, and very spontaneous.

They like to move, they love art, and love lots of positive attention. Many of them receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I am hopeful to inspire my students to see art as an important part of everyday life.

My Project

I have been teaching art for over 20 years and these are some of my favorite supplies. I love using a black oil pastel or sharpie for sketching out their paintings first. A pencil and eraser give them too much time to worry about perfection and some of the most precious artworks come from a little mistake a student would have erased given the chance.

The materials that I need for my students are the best at getting them motivated to create art.

I love high quality watercolor paper that some of my students have never used before and are thrilled just by touching it. I also love tempera cakes. They are a great product and less threatening than the liquid paint for some of my students. If a student is less than happy with a work we can always turn it into a collage with a little glue, paper, and glitter. In my class if you mess it up, you dress it up.
