My students need blacklights, flashlights, glow bracelets and necklaces, reactive tape and paint, and neon balloons so I can create a Glow Day where the students can master academic concepts in a fun, engaging way!
My students are smart, curious, fun-loving, creative, hardworking, helpful, and kind. My 22 students represent countries all over the world, as well as learning levels from Kindergarten to fifth grade. Some of my students need daily intervention while others need daily enrichment. My school consists of about 1,000 students of diverse backgrounds and diverse learning abilities. We have a growing population of ELL students and students for which we implement interventions in reading and math, as well as students needing enrichment to acquire success for their educational needs. Our school does not receive Title I funding; therefore, the technology that we have in our classroom is limited and has to be funded through other means. Our school has an amazing administration and staff who are dedicated to meet each of these diverse needs. The environment of our school is warm, nurturing, and respectful.
My Project
I feel we should be creating experiences for our students that they will never forget and make them excited about learning. Earlier this year, I attended the Ron Clark Academy, and I learned about new ways to engage my students. One of the new ways I learned about is to do room transformations. A room transformation creates a fun surprise and sets the bar high for engagement and rigor with students. One of the room transformations I want to do with my students is a Glow Room.
When students walk into their transformed classroom they will see black lights, neon colors, and a room full of games and activities ready to review what we have been learning.
My students are always more engaged when I can incorporate games and competition into the review. Students will rotate to centers as they complete task cards that review content that has been taught during the year. However, they won't just complete the task cards; instead, students can bowl, play Jenga, compete in a ring toss game, and many other games that will be brought to life using glow sticks and the reflective tape and paint. It's important for students to continuously review and practice concepts, and I plan to use a variety of games to engage students during the Glow Day. The blacklights, flashlights, balloons, and paint can be reused from year to year helping me provide this classroom transformation for a new group of second graders for years to come. Lessons are easily forgotten but experiences last forever!
