Let's Get Ready for Third Grade - Science

My students need an Authentic Fossils Discovery Set, an Easy-View Telescope, a Solar System Fact Finder, a Set of 20 “Watch-It-Grow” Window Greenhouses and Class Pack of Clear Growing Crystals, a Complete Set of Overhead Science Teaching Kits, an Owl Pellet Classroom Kit, a Lakeshore Magnet Lab and a Lakeshore Electricity Lab.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Russo's classroom raised $599

This project is fully funded

I teach 3rd grade at a low income elementary school in San Francisco. Our school has the interesting distinction of being located in one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city, but at the same time – in equally close proximity to one of the most severe high-need areas in the city, as well. We have quite a diverse population. I personally have students that are African-American, Native American, Mexican, Samoan, Chinese and Vietnamese, and there are only 18 students in my classroom.

My students are extremely interested in science this year! It all began last year when I hosted a Science Club during lunch. We did what we could with the materials I could find; hatching butterflies, constructing erupting volcanoes, mixing Oobleck, and creating shooting fountains out of Mentos and Diet Coke. Unfortunately, we don't have many hands-on science tools for classroom use. I don’t want to redo the activities we did last year, but I do want to “re” inspire the imagination and interest that got them hooked on Science in the first place. We need science materials not only to actively engage us, but to keep us interested in hands-on experimenting and learning how science applies to our everyday lives.

I have no third grade science materials for my classroom because our school’s budget is so tight. Still, my goal is to give provide my students with hands-on experiences that engage them while helping them meet the California Content Area Standards in Science as our district demands. I have seen first-hand how Science concepts come to life and make much more sense to children when they can engage in hands-on learning. My students need to explore and make these connections, and I want to get at them from every angle – owl pellets, fossils, geodes, a solar system model, a telescope, as well as a magnet lab and electricity lab. I am confident that these materials will light the spark that helps my students understand the role science plays in their lives, while at the same time, making them successful science learners.

Seeing my students get excited about science has been so wonderful. Your support for this proposal could be instrumental in making a tremendous difference in the lives of these kids. Continuing these hands-on experiences and the application of science to “real-life” situations might even put these children on the path to career in science. You might be helping to nurture a future doctor, nurse or veterinarian.
