My Students
Do you remember what it was like when you read that first word or first story? For my first graders, this is a daily struggle which could result from language difficulties to learning difficulties. My first graders deserve the best, and I want to provide them with the enrichment to succeed!
The first graders in my classroom are always eager to learn, no matter what background they come from.
These students attend a Title I school where 96% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. These first graders come from single parent homes or homes where one or more parent is unemployed, or possibly they are homeless.
Many of my students speak languages other than English at home but their families provide for them the best they can. The first graders in my classroom, at times, struggle with learning because of the lack of supplies and educational cutbacks.
My Project
The reading materials that I am requesting for my students will help me improve the relationship between home and school. The past few years the biggest push in our district is reading, but we have found that our students are missing something at home to help them be great readers: BOOKS!
I will be using these books for students to take home and practice reading every night with. Students will learn how to recognize books that are too hard and too easy so they can pick just right books. We also look forward to using the take-home storage bags.
The items I need to help with my literacy instruction will enhance and challenge what they already know.
