My Students

I am the librarian at an inner-city, K-6 elementary school. Our school is an Expeditionary Learning (EL) school. EL involves rigorous academic work centered on compelling topics that are both interesting and relevant to the students.

We are an exceptionally high performing school and my students just love to read.

However, we are currently 100% fully remote and many of my students have little or no access to physical books. I anticipate our district being fully remote for the entire year, and I would love to hand out books for my students to keep and read at home.

My Project

Our elementary students are 100% fully remote. These kids love to read, but unfortunately, many of them do not have access to good quality books and their neighborhood libraries (if they can access them) are not all open at this time.

Reading is so important, especially at the 3rd and 4th-grade level.

My inner-city students are learning this skill, but the practice is important to become a fluent reader. Many of my students are at a disadvantage since their parents/guardians work and there is no one to take them to a local library or bookstore so that they have access to high-quality reading materials.

By providing my students with a choice of interesting books that they want to read, I am hoping to spark that interest and keep them learning.
