This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Play is a form of research." ~Albert Einstein
My students are a curious and energetic group of fourth graders who seem to become more focused and inspired after recess - a time of fun and physical exercise and activity.
They attend a Title I elementary school in New York City. Our school is located in the South Bronx - in an area with a very high concentration of poverty. Most, if not all, of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
When my students were asked if they watched the 2016 Summer Olympics, they shouted, "Yes!" They said they enjoyed the races and seeing the U.S. win gold medals in the races, basketball, swimming and gymnastics. They said they would like to have more resources ("balls, ropes and music") for their own physical activities. When asked what supplies they would need, they said, "basketball balls and basketball nets and batons for the relay races and music." Many of the students said, "We need new jump ropes." For brain breaks, they said they would "need music" and would like to select their own music for our four regularly scheduled in-class 'brain-break' physical activities that would keep them alert and physically fit. With the Amazon Echo and Dot, said they could ask Alexa to "Play Y-M-C-A " or other popular songs for one of their four lively, regularly scheduled 15-minute brain break physical activities in the morning or afternoon and even during indoor recess when the weather is inclement.
They said these resources will enable them to have resources in the classroom, during their daily recess period, and during their gym periods.
They said these resources will inspire them and help keep them active and physically fit.
