My Students
Every day I have the awesome opportunity to teach some of the most amazing and hardworking students that I have ever met. I teach high school students with Autism. I am always amazed at their unique way of learning and I am constantly trying to come up with innovative ways to best serve their specific learning needs. My school's mission is to help all students have successful post-secondary lives by teaching them necessary life skills. We encourage students to hone daily living and work skills through community-based learning and through the utilization of technology.
My Project
Physical Education is an important part of a students overall health and well-being. This is especially true of children and adults with Autism and other developmental disabilities. Studies show that students and adults who have autism are at a higher risk of an inactive lifestyle and obesity. Bearing this in mind, it is imperative that students have access to a productive gym program. In an effort to provide this to my students, I am seeking donations for gym equipment.
Our school is housed in a converted building that we share with three other high schools.
Because of the building’s makeup, we do not have a school gym. All schools share an outdoor space that is not conducive on its own for gym activity. Having this equipment will allow us to create a space and activities for students to have a productive outdoor gym program. Equipment will include a play parachute, soccer and beach balls, soccer goal posts, jump ropes and cones. All equipment will be used for team sports and free play for our school gym program. Our gym program will help students learn important skills like team building, self-direction and leadership. These mentioned skills are vital in helping our students to be successful in their post-secondary lives.
