For high school students with moderate cognitive disabilities, participating in competitive sports through Special Olympics helps them to learn and grow on so many levels. These students are from a very high-need community, go to a charter high school, and are all part of a small special education classroom.
My students have just started competing in Special Olympics activities. Many of these students have grown socially because of these interactions. Many have had little to no physical activity in their life outside of school or in school. Now that they have had a taste of the Special Olympic activities, they would like to continue with all the events - Bocce Ball, Basketball, Bowling, Track and Field, etc. The problem our school faces is getting the supplies so that they can practice and improve for competition.
With these supplies, the students will be able to practice daily during their gym period for Special Olympics. Special Olympics is something they can continue doing after they graduate from high school. It allows them to find people who are going through similar situations as they are. It allows for them to collaborate with other people with disabilities.
These supplies are more than basic gym supplies - they are a window into how to socially and physically take care of oneself. Your donation will help ensure these important life lessons will be taught and learned.
