Let's Get Physical - Even During a Pandemic!

Help me give my students obstacle course equipment. Let them learn to become strong mental, physical, and social beings that learn to thrive independently and cooperatively when challenges come their way.

My Students

I teach third grade at a predominantly military school in Honolulu, Hawaii. My students come from all over the world with different backgrounds and cultural knowledge. They are energetic and enthusiastic! They love to move and interact with others while they are learning.

Since my students are very transient, it it important for me to create ways for them to build relationships with their peers not only in a classroom setting, but outside as well.

Teamwork and unity is emphasized to foster a sense of community. Physical challenges that are properly set up allow opportunities for classmates to form a unique bond with one another.

My Project

After being home for so long enduring lockdowns and months of distance learning, students need to get out, get up, and get active! Physical activity promotes strong muscles, bones, and improves overall health. Specialty equipment such as stackable steps, jump ropes, skip balls, double dutch ropes, frisbee golf discs, and stilts will be used to build individual skills as shared equipment for recess is not allowed at this time.

PE is not only beneficial to student's health, but it also helps improve their concentration and builds their interpersonal skills.

Besides building individual skills, students will participate in group activities. The parachute and obstacle course set will build cooperative and social skills. Students will still be distanced, but these activities require them to work together. The cones will be utilized to block off specific areas to ensure safety and distance restrictions. The mesh bag will help store these equipment pieces. Items will be sanitized between usage.

Lastly, this year our school no longer has a designated PE teacher. As a general education teacher I am now required to conduct my own PE lessons. I want to make sure I utilize my PE block well. In turn, I hope students will develop a personal love for physical activity and see challenges as endearing.
