it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A huge part of our day is spent on the carpet where we do calendar activities, story time, and movement. In the years that I have been in my pre-k classroom, our rug has been worn out! In addition, the size of our classroom is limited on space. My students have no place to hang their backpacks.
Just like a typical public school in Southern California, my students come from a very diverse group of families and backgrounds.
For some, this is their first time going to school, which can be scary and overwhelming for four-year-olds. My job, as their teacher, is to make their daily experience in school as exciting as possible. In order to do this, our classroom has to be inviting, organized and spacious.
My Project
My pre-k students' daily routine is leaving their backpacks outside on the benches before entering the classroom. On rainy and extremely hot days, they put the backpacks inside the classroom. There is hardly room for the backpacks, so they usually stay on a table or on the floor. This makes our classroom claustrophobic, creating an environment not suitable for student learning. A backpack storage cart is a great way to organize my students' belongings.
Another integral part of our day is rug-time. Our classroom rug gets steam-cleaned once a year and it gets vacuumed weekly, if we are lucky. My students deserve a new and colorful rug with the numbers and alphabet so they can learn as they play. A new rug can spark my students imaginations as they hop on the alphabet bees and sit on numbered flowers.

My students will enjoy the new carpet which will motivate them to sing, dance, and participate during rug-time activities.
Our classroom will also be clutter-free from the backpack storage cart. My students will be ready for kindergarten as they go about their daily routines of storing their backpacks.
