Let's Get Organized! Promoting Accountability and Independence in 9th Grade
My students need classroom organization systems, storage, and materials that promote ownership and responsibility in a trusting, collaborative environment.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Ninth grade students are my favorite to teach. They are new to the high school environment, and come in on the first day feeling apprehensive, uncertain, and quiet. The reward of seeing a ninth grader grow into a confident and prepared student who is ready to take on the rest of high school (and the world beyond) is what motivates me every day!
Ninth graders' minds are like sponges; they love to absorb, process, and question every bit of information.
I want to foster this inquisitive nature in my students and help them learn and understand through inquiry and discovery.
The young people in my classroom are each unique pieces that make up the classroom puzzle. My class population includes Special Education students, English Language Learners, immigrants, and students who will be the first in their family to graduate high school. The diverse experiences that students bring to our class environment ensure that different perspectives are shared and respected.
My Project
Mrs. Streeter's ninth grade ELA classroom needs your help! We are in desperate need of a classroom organization system that will help foster independence and accountability for general and special education students.
As an educator, one of my primary responsibilities is to guide students toward becoming responsible and accountable young citizens who are prepared for the demands of the 'real world'.
However, it is very difficult to do so when our school lacks the funds to provide basic classroom materials and resources that encourage student-centered learning.
Your donation will provide materials that will help students of all ability levels practice the important life skills of collaboration, responsibility, accountability, and independence:
* WHITEBOARDS will provide ample writing space for announcements about short and long term projects, a class calendar, and a space for students to come up and write/draw/share thought processes with peers (we currently don't have a large writing surface in the classroom).
* STORAGE CABINET and DESK ORGANIZERS will provide space for all classroom supplies, handouts, book sets, etc. and will be the 'student center'. Students will collaborate with peers to organize and responsibly utilize all of these materials, allowing them to learn how to work as a team and be accountable as a group.
* LETTER TRAYS will be used for submitting completed assignments and getting back graded assignments for portfolios. We will implement a 'turn it in' protocol that will facilitate students reliability in submitting assignments without constant reminders from the teacher.
* FILE FOLDERS and STORAGE BOXES will be used to store student portfolios. These portfolios will allow students to track with their progress and reflect on their growth over the course of the school year.
