This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my little learners with autism have a difficult time speaking and expressing themselves verbally. With music, their voices come to life and are able to say words I've never heard them use before! it's amazing what music and instruments can do to a child's language.
I am a Special Education teacher in an inner-city school district in CT.
I teach in a self-contained classroom where my students with Autism Spectrum Disorder have difficulty with not only academics, but language skills, self-help skills and social skills. My room consists of 8 students, most of whom are non-verbal or have very limited verbal communication skills. My students remain in my classroom all day, which means that I teach them academics, social skills, daily living skills, communication, and so much more.
My Project
These musical instruments, CD's and activity bean bags will not only get my little ones singing and talking, but it will get them moving, as well! It will help with their coordination, requesting and waiting skills, and mostly, their language skills. Many of my student's have a difficult time with communication but for some reason, once music comes on, their language flourishes! These music CD's will allow them to choose songs they know and love, and the instruments will allow them to request what they would like to make music with. We sing almost every day in my room, but we only have one music CD that the children really enjoy. It's time for new materials for my deserving students!
Your support will give my students music and materials that will provide them with fun and effective learning and communication opportunities.
These materials would not only help my students this year, but for many many years down the road!
