Many of my 5th-grade students live at or below the poverty line. Some of my students come to school without a pencil or hungry from not having an adequate breakfast at home. Even though some days are more of a struggle than others, this does not take away from their desire to learn.
My students are best described as curious, eager, and willing.
Each one is unique and special to me. Most of my students are driven by technology and the media. They like to research and learn about the world around them through a hands-on approach. They are quick to text, tweet, and post.
My students have an interest in many topics and also love to discuss. I want to instill a love of reading in my students.
My scholars LOVE their recess time!!! Robert R. Gray Elementary School is part of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. We had the honor of being named one of America's Healthiest Schools in 2017. It is our job as educators to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. Also to ensure that students receive consistent information and education regarding proper nutrition, increased physical activity, and the benefits of healthy lifestyle choices throughout the school, classroom, and cafeteria.
It is recommended that elementary schools set aside 30 minutes each day for recess and we are always sure to meet this goal!
There is only one problem. The issue lies within the lack of proper equipment which would allow my students to partake in the physical activity. With several students to serve, the PE department often finds themselves running out of materials to loan out and share with classroom teachers.
It is the duty of our school to provide both a physical and social environment that encourages safe and enjoyable activity for all students. This includes offering opportunities for non-competitive physical activity. Your donation would help my students stay healthy, fit, and moving!
