My students need pedometers to track and increase their activity levels, jump ropes to increase daily activity level in a fun way, and stools to increase movement within the classroom.
There are 24 students in my class. The students in my classroom are eager learners who come from diverse backgrounds, including Hmong, Mexican-American, African-American, and Indian. Our school is located in a high poverty area, but our families believe in the power of a quality education.
We are a Title 1 school where 100% of the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch.
All of my students come to school full of energy and hope. My goal every day is to ensure that they leave the same way.
My Project
My students have long complained that they do not get enough time to be active during the school day. In response to this, I urged them to think about how we could increase our daily activity level to at least 60 minutes a day. In my student's lives, there is often little opportunity to be active. My students want a fun and engaging way to increase their activity level.
My students want to lead healthier and happier lives, and they know that increasing their activity level will help to improve not only their physical fitness but also their ability to focus in class.
Being able to keep track of their daily activity, practicing (or learning how to) jump rope, and have flexible seating in the class will encourage my students to increase their activity levels.
Children who are more active are sick less often, miss less school, and are creating healthy habits and fostering a lifelong commitment to physical activity. In a neighborhood where outdoor play is not always encouraged, the opportunity to be more active during the school day can be transformative.
