My Students
I teach in a school where the student population is linguistically and culturally diverse, and which serves a community with families from all over the world. I am always looking for highly engaging, creative ways to tap into my students' hunger for knowledge and their curiosity about the world, whether it is through art, music, dance, or literature.
I see the exciting possibilities that I can make available to my students who need opportunities to explore creative and critical thinking through different learning modalities.
And I am often touched by the level of care and kindness with which all my students help each other in our quest to learn. Now, even in my 20th year as an educator, my students never cease to amaze me with their persistence and grit in learning new content, as well as their inquisitiveness, creativity, and eagerness to learn new things.
My Project
I believe that part of a child's well-rounded education should provide experiences in learning and practicing mindfulness. Especially given the challenges we have had in the last two years, and seeing how anxiety has affected my students and their families, the need for social-emotional learning (SEL) is more important than ever. This year, I am requesting materials such as wobble cushions, stretchy strings, stress balls, squishies, and poppet bubble toys to promote calm in the classroom. I also would like to bring in more resources such as the mindfulness workbook and the mindfulness activity cards into a block of time we already have in the mornings, which are devoted specifically to SEL and mindfulness practice.
It is my intent to make SEL as purposeful and engaging for my second graders as possible, and in doing so, give them opportunities to learn how to focus better and be more able to regulate themselves and their emotions, now and in the future.
