Most of my students live in a zip code where they have been heavily impacted by the virus. Our school district has provided 2.8 million free million meals since the outbreak. Since we are a one-to-one school, the transition hasn’t been difficult when it comes to navigating through Google classroom and submitting assignments as well as working online.
However, remote learning has proven to be difficult for many students since they don’t have a separate space that allows them to focus on their work.
Not to mention many have parents and guardians who are essential workers. They don't have many physical resources available as the public libraries are closed. A few students have books at home, but to build a library would mean they have resources and entertainment at their fingertips even if the internet goes down.
Many students have expressed sadness, anxiety, and boredom during the outbreak. While meeting with them virtually, they expressed how much they love books that are exciting and keep them guessing. Students having a book that personally interests them can give them some sense of normalcy in a world where that is questioned. A book will allow them to get lost for some time without any worries of the outside world even if it’s only for a few hours. Not only do I want my students to get lost in their books, but I want them to receive the other benefits of reading daily. Students that read every day receive many advantages such as increasing their vocabulary, better their writing skills, improved focus and concentration, and improved memory. All of which will help them not only in school, but in life as well.
In addition to book reading as self care, writing in a journal is a great form as well.
Students need a place to express themselves, especially during these times where they are not physically around their friends. Writing in a journal is therapeutic and since the students don’t have access to the social workers or counselors, this can be their form of therapy in the meantime. Students will also be writing about the book their readings, such as a character who they love or question why a character made a particular decision.
Kids eat a lot. They're probably eating more now that they're home all the time and the snack supply depletes fairly quickly. Students having something to snack on while they read allows them to get lost in the book without wondering what they can eat. The books, journal, and snacks will help my students maintain their self care in addition to improving their mental and academic abilities.
