My Project
The best way to teach the drama that informs our culture is to have students perform it. For that we need costumes! All the most established teachers at the biggest, most well resourced schools have a set of props and costumes they use when teaching things like Shakespeare, and my students deserve them too. Additionally, I teach at a technology focused charter school that does a great job at stretching our resources to make sure students have access to leading edge devices and technology, but does not have much left over for the basics of good humanities instruction.
Drama builds the empathy that our tech focused students so desperately need.
But instructional drama is so much more effective with costumes and props like the ones in my project. And although my 100 students will most definitely benefit from these costumes, they are sturdy and well sized and carefully selected so that our entire department can use them. Since we don't have the budget for a full on drama class, it is imperative that we use what we can access to build a collection of materials that is flexible and multi purpose. The costumes I chose for my students meet all these criteria and will be well loved and used by our students to learn empathy and access high status knowledge like Shakespearean Drama for years to come!
Additionally, I teach comprehensive level classes which include the majority of our English language learning and students with disabilities. Costumes and incentives, like the ones in this project, give them extra motivation to engage in what they're learning and to maximize their achievement.
