Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach a wonderful group of third graders in the most obese state in this country. We are in an extremely high-need community with the majority of my students eating free or reduced breakfast and lunch daily. A number of our students receive supplemental food packages on the weekends to help assure they won't be hungry over the weekend or holidays.

So, many of the students are overweight. They live in neighborhoods that are not conducive (safe) for outdoor play. Parents often work long hours while children stay indoors a great deal of the time. Budget cuts afford students P.E. only one day a week. During recess, the students often congregate in small groups and visit because there is not much to do.

I am asking for an active playground equipment set that contains various sized balls for different games, such as kickball and basketball. This set also includes a set of jump ropes and hoops. Students will use the cones and bean bags as bases and in various other ways on the playground and in the room to remain active. The take apart human body model will be used to teach students how the various systems of the body work together to help keep them healthy and how exercise plays a part in keeping their hearts healthy. In addition, the human body activity tub will be used to reinforce and extend lessons learned about the various systems in the body. The last thing my students need is an aerobics CD to use during rainy days. Aerobics is an awesome tool to get kids up, moving, and heart healthy.

With so many students being obese, there is no easy way to overcome this situation. The main focus must be on education and activity. I will use the take apart model and activity tub as part of my teaching strategy. The exercise activity equipment and aerobics CD will be used daily during recess and during special times (such as rainy days). We will be up and moving a great deal with these materials. My students will be learning heart healthy strategies that they can take home and pass on to brothers, sisters, and other family members. Together, we will be making a difference in their lives.
