I am privileged as a school nurse to serve 300 plus boys and girls with their health care needs and to assist in health education. Students begin at PreK and go through 5th grade.
Most of our students are from low income families, and we have several different ethnic groups.
The students are very much interested in learning and health education is a great benefit to their daily lives. They are taught about hand washing, personal hygiene, and how to stay healthy through good eating and physical activities. Some students are just learning to take care of themselves. Many are at the age where their bodies are changing, and they are in need of support in the areas of health care education, self care skills and the importance of this care on a daily basis. I want to see each child succeed and be healthy and happy!
My Project
This project will have items available to demonstrate the correct use of products during health education classes. The deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste will also be on hand at school when hygiene care may have been forgotten at home, hygiene items were not available at home or during the day if hygiene care is required. I believe students have to be healthy to be educated and educated to be healthy. This healthiness will increase self-esteem and pride in themselves.
This personal care closet may decrease or even prevent bullying in school from their peers that may stem from personal hygiene issues.
