My Project

The past two years my students and I have incubated eggs in collaboration with our Trumpet of The Swan Unit. This unit is heavy on science and English Language Arts. We read a fiction text and then study ecological regions in Non-Fiction Texts. As the swans begin their family and lay eggs in the fiction story, we visit our local Necedah Wildlife Refuge and see the Trumpeter Swans as they make their return to our local nesting area.

Next, we begin our study of eggs and incorporate incubating and hatching eggs.

We collaborate with local businesses and families to supply us with eggs for our incubator. The past two years, I have borrowed aged equipment. This year, we lost half of our Hatch due to issues with humidity. The hatched chicks are returned to the local donor after the hatch.

With the new equipment we will have a more successful hatch and more success with this project in the future. This is a project that I share with my other third grade teammates.
