My Students

I teach at an elementary school whose community is nestled in the beautiful east valley of Helena Montana. Our 4th-grade team has students who have a variety of academic needs. As an educator, I use DonorsChoose.org to find ways to reach every single student's academic, social and emotional needs to help them grow.

My students come with a variety of backgrounds and interests.

My goal is to provide as many engaging opportunities and activities for my students. This year more than ever my students have shown me how many​ graphic novels have become very popular. If I can help my students gain achievements in literacy and build relationships with one on one reading time I would love to give them the engaging books.

My Project

I have started an initiative in my classroom that I am going to read with all of my students 1 on 1 every week. My student's and I found books that we felt were good fits during our time. With the length of some of​ the books we have chosen, I was worried that I would lose some of their focus because of the length of the stories.

I want to build a library with classic books that have been adapted into graphic novels.

Graphic novels are great for "reluctant readers" and kids just learning to read. They're generally fast-paced, and the word-to-picture correlation provides an easy way to expand children's vocabularies. Perhaps more importantly, graphic novels tend to be more engaging than other "early reader" books. Another plus: the number of titles is expanding rapidly every year, so there's something for every child's interests. Last, but not least, graphic novels positively impact children’s visual literacy skills, which are more essential than ever in the digital age.

Graphic novels have really become popular and a lot of classic stories are being adapted into a graphic novel version.

With your help, I will be able to help my students gain confidence in their reading skills and help build relationships with my students with a designated one on one time.
