Over half the students in our district come from low-income households. We live in a socioeconomically depressed area in the heart of the coal region, where a once thriving region now struggles to compete with areas that are more populated and have more resources. Over the years, businesses have left our region leaving residents without many opportunities.
Despite some of the personal challenges that they face, when my students cross the line into the classroom each day, they are eager and willing to learn, focusing on academics and self-improvement.
I'm impressed each and every day by their desire and motivation to succeed.
My Project
Over half of the students in my school come from low-income households. While we have a Bring-Your-Own Device policy, many families cannot afford to purchase a device to send to school with their student(s).
A lot of my students struggle with reading, and our textbook offers online support for these struggling readers; however, our school cannot afford to supply technology for all of these students.
Having Kindle Fires available in my classroom will allow me to meet the individual needs of my students, whether they need more support or they are in need of more enrichment than the paperback textbook provides. These devices will enable my students to remain academically competitive in a society that relies heavily on technology.
