Let’s Get Excited for Reading Part 2!

Help me give my students motivational materials including stickers for their sticker charts, fun seating to increase comfort for reading time, and fidget toys to help them if they are not able to maintain the whole reading time.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach 7th and 8th grade small pull out support English class. All the students, in my classes, are students with IEPs. Most of my students struggle with reading both motivationally and academically. They struggle because reading is very challenging to them because they are usually reading anywhere from 2-3 grade levels lower than their actual grade level.

I want to be able to provide motivation to help them look forward and want to read during their independent reading time.

My Project

My students do not always find reading fun or entertaining. I want to provide some motivational items for our independent reading time.

The stickers will be used for them to earn rewards inside the classroom after they have received so many on their reading chart.

The chair cushions will make independent reading time more comfortable for the students if they decide to stay at their seats. If they prefer they can take one of the larger cushions or wobble chairs and sit somewhere on the floor around the classroom. The larger reading center pillow, will be kept near the library, will be an incentive use for when they complete the required number of on task reading days and can be rotated through students when they reach their goal. I included enough flexible seating options that every student could have one to use and then be wiped down before my other class to limit the spread of germs right now during the pandemic.

The fidget toys will allow students, who struggle with staying on task and quiet for the silent reading, a way to get some of their energy out in a more quiet fashion while they are reading their books.
