Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a high poverty school in a Moderate and Severe Disabilities (MSD) self-contained classroom. My students have various disabilities (e.g., autism, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities) that create difficulties in their daily lives. Despite many hardships, my students come to school ready to learn each day.
My students require a lot of educational supports but are capable of so much, and they are working hard each day to find new and creative ways to learn academic standards and daily life skills. My students love to dance, sing, go outside, and play on the computer.
My Project
This project provides my students with all of the crafting supplies they could need to create anything they could want!
Arts and crafts are a great way to help express yourself and expand on social emotional learning. These art supplies will help my students do just that, express themselves through hands-on art activities. These supplies will also help students when talking about social and emotional needs, by expressing themselves through the arts. Sometimes it is easier to express one’s self through the arts rather than words and this project will allow my students to do just that.
My students have a variety of needs and disabilities. These disabilities can sometimes make it hard to verbalize their thoughts and feelings. Making art projects and getting creative can often times be an alternative way my students are able to express themselves.
