Help me give my students the tools they need to practice their life skills in the area of cooking, with a microwave, toaster, blender, and toaster oven!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a self contained special education classroom in a urban public school that is made up of students with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. My students are in middle school in grades 6-8. They have different ability levels and have different instructional needs.
In my classroom we focus on our students abilities and not their disability!
We focus on the students as a whole. We teach academics, social skills, and life skills to best prepare them to become a independent functioning members of the community!
My Project
Our students struggle with life skills, especially cooking. Our district has built us a kitchen with some of the necessary appliances, but there are still more that we need in the area of kitchen equipment. We are limited with what we can cook due to the lack of equipment in our kitchen currently. I was shocked to find many of my students couldn't name even the most basic kitchen tools or demonstrate basic cooking skills. Appliances like a microwave, blender, and toaster oven are everyday appliance our students need to learn to use. These skills are so important to develop their independence and improve their life skills.
This equipment will allow us to practice cooking with the students in a more real life setting with the type of kitchen equipment they will find in their own homes.
This will allow them to generalize those skills in their own kitchens at home!
We would even like to use cooking as a way to invite in peers from the school to eat with us to create social opportunities for the students to practice their social skills as well.
More than half of students from low‑income households
