Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students at risk of dropping out of high school. When they attend our school they receive the personalized support needed to earn their diplomas. They are kind and generous and have been left to think they don't belong. The students come from a varied set of backgrounds and circumstances but there is always one common theme; They just needed something different in their lives.
One thing they seem to need is motivation and the need to feel like they can go from feeling hopeless to hopeful.
My Project
Life skills are essential to being a productive member of a society who is healthy and is able to care for others and themselves. At Simon Youth Academy, our students attend our school because they have lost their way in the education system and are failing or falling behind. Because they have to focus on academics, they don't get to participate in electives such as a food preparation course or life skills. We want to encourage them to learn a few basic skills to take on in life. Healthy home-cooked meals are essential to saving money and living a healthy life. It encourages math and science skills as well in a more relatable experience.
Let's get cooking, will be a series of these healthy life skills that will continue throughout the year and we hope it continues throughout their lifetime.
We will learn to read recipes, measure, prepare, cook, and bake. We will learn how to take care of ourselves by using these kitchen supplies and create simple recipes within our classtime.
We hope this series will encourage them to not reach for the fast-food options each time but that they too can make simple, delicious, and healthy meals while enjoying their time in the kitchen. This will lead to self-esteem rising, a healthier lifestyle, and social interaction with classmates.
