Let's Get Comfy, Cozy, and Creative in the Reading Nook!

Help me give my students cozy seating, an area rug, materials for writing projects, and a laminator to protect student work.

My Project

Over my last nine years of teaching, I have learned that my first-grade students LOVE a cozy book nook area to practice their new reading skills and become authors. They always talk about what they are reading, as well as come up with ideas they want to write about in their journals.

My upcoming first graders are still at the start of their educational careers and it's my job to bring as much joy and encouragement to their learning as possible!

The items I have requested will create a fun area for students to read and discuss ideas for their writing. Having an area rug, comfortable chairs, and a small bench will create a great environment for diving into some books.

The primary journals and card stock are for writing time. When I start teaching how to become an author, I give students time to talk with their peers and come up with ideas. Then, they use primary journals for their writing and illustrations. I have card stock for our bigger writing projects--either to glue their written work or draw an illustration. I asked for a laminator so that I can preserve their work and hang it in our classroom or in the hallway for other students to see. I love seeing how proud my students are when they can share their work with friends or family.

A challenge with writing is the time it takes each student. I included play dough for them to use once they finish. I have stickers to put in notebooks as a motivator. The sensory bottles are for when students get frustrated and need time to think. The name tags and spots are for their desks.
