Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine a comfortable corner where students can choose a great book, sit in a soft cozy chair, and enjoy looking through many books. This is the reading center I envision for my students.
My students are beginning readers who want to read every word they see… around the classroom, on the way to the lunchroom, and in the media center.
Some of my students have challenges that make reading even more difficult. For some English is a second language and a few have speech and language challenges, but all have supportive families who are willing to work with them at home.
Not only does my class truly enjoy story time, they are also greatly influenced by the books we have read this year. After reading a book about a club where children help out in their community my students formed the Kids Care Club. So far this year the club has cleaned up our school campus, put on a show at a retirement home, collected can goods and teddy bears for those in need at the holidays, and made cards and books for those who were sick. I am inspired by these remarkable children on a daily basis and want to do all that I can to encourage and support this love of books and reading.
My Project
In order for children to acquire the skills they need to become independent readers I am proposing the “Let’s Get Comfy and Read” reading center. I envision a comfortable and inviting nook where the children will be able to pick any book they are interested in and practice reading that story. The Center will include four beanbag chairs and a shelf to both store and display books.
The students will be able to settle in with a good book of their choosing, get comfortable and read!
As with most skills, practice leads to mastery. I feel certain that this center will encourage students to spend as much time as possible reading.
