Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Based in Pleasantville, in a small city in South Jersey, our public elementary school is a diverse community of learners. From many different cultural, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds, we share our many different experiences with each other. Our student population includes many high-needs learners and over 90% of our student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch (the percentage of students receiving free or reduced price lunch is often used as a measure for the percentage of students living in poverty). My students are surrounded by technology: smartphones, laptops, and digital cameras, to name a few, and they love to use any technology in school.
Most of my classes throughout the day are inclusion classes and it is great to see all of my students collaborating and having fun using technology together!
My Project
My students love coding and they have want to do more, they want to go higher....literally. These Parrot Mambo codable drones will allow there dreams (and algorithms) to fly higher than they ever dreamed. They will be able to write lines of coding and watch the drone follow their algorithms way up in the sky. The possibilities are sky high! The students that I work with are very excited about learning and curious about the world around them (especially anything involving STEM). These codable drones will help my students learn more about the world around through problem solving.
These drones will also gives my students with disabilities real world skills and helps turn them into producers in this digital world.
It interests them, and makes them more willing and likely to socialize, building the important skill of teamwork and socialization, often lacking in the learning disabled student population.
All of my students love educational technology and it is one of my passions as an educator. I love being able to use technology to supplement and enhance my teaching experiences with my students. These drones will be absolutely amazing for my students! With an programmable drones my students (especially my students with disabilities) will be exposed to a level of computer science that they otherwise would not have access to. With your help this project will give all of my students an advantage in the area of technology and may encourage them to pursue a career path they would have never imagined without the exposure to this innovative technology. Thank you!
