Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a low income school district and school in which 97% of students are considered to be living below poverty level, my students are not exposed to high end technology and STEAM activities. Many of my students face academic challenges and household financial challenges.
Brownville, Texas is a border city of Mexico, some of my students come and go every day to Mexico.
Some of my students have to wake up as early as of 5:00 in the morning just to get to school on time. This however, does not stop my students from learning and from always trying to do their best. Expectations, are still set high and they know there are no excuses not to excel. My students are humble, friendly, charismatic children. Each one of my students is special in their own unique way. My class consist of 19 incredibly amazing students. Of those 19 students 14 are English Language Learners, 2 are artistically gifted and talented.
Our school believes that every child is capable of learning. Our goal as a school to educate our students so that they can become productive citizens in today's and tomorrow’s society.
My Project
My students need STEM Kit activities! It is always shocking to students when they find out they are learning and using their critical-thinking skills and creativity when they are doing something they truly enjoy, It is amazing how a switch turns on when students are using their higher order thinking skills and creativity.
We are a STEM campus.
This is our first year with this initiative, and we are excited to learn and grow from this experience. However we still need STEM kits. These STEM kits will enhance their knowledge in building and construction while using mathematical and science concepts. Science and math is everywhere, in the world around us. Technology continues to grow in every part of our lives. Engineering not to mention is the basic design of road and bridges. The building blocks as well as the construction kits will help my students understand the foundation concepts of building bridges road, houses building etc. They will use the blocks to explore ways they can use them to design buildings and roads that are able to resist change and weight. My students are active participants and just need an opportunity to be given to them so they can fully use their engineering and mathematical skills. These engineering kits will provide my students an understanding of how things work in the real world.
Can my students build? YES, they can! Can my students design? YES—but do my students have the materials needed for them to be able to do this? Not yet. But with your support, we will. Give us an opportunity so they can truly show and use their full potential.
