My second grade class is made up of an amazing group of 24 students. They are inquisitive and passionate about learning. Each day, they enter the classroom ready to learn and excited for the day ahead. Approximately 40% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our school serves a small, close-knit suburban community. We have a growing number of military families attending our school as we have a military housing within our school boundaries.

My Project
Science is a favorite subject for many of my students. They break out in cheer when they find out we have a special science project for the day.
STEM activities are by far their favorite.
STEM combines Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math to engage students. I love being able to provide opportunities for students to build their skills in these areas.
These materials will be a wonderful way to bring more STEM opportunities into our classroom. I currently have a few STEM bins that students love using. They are challenged to create certain things such as a house, tower, bridge, etc. using the supplied materials. The new addition of LEGOS, building sticks, sculpting sticks, and magnetic blocks (along with some storage containers for them) will be a great addition to this popular activity.
Some of the other materials like the marble run will allow us to work together as a class or in a small group to build and design. An important part of STEM is going back and evaluating a design to see what could be changed to improve upon the original design. Have such a wide variety of materials will allow students the ability to consider if perhaps a change in their building material would make their design more effective. I cannot wait to see the amazing things my students will be able to learn as they work through this design and redesign process.
