I have the privilege to work in a Title One school with amazing students everyday. They are all so strong and resilient. So many of them have experienced so much hardship in their young lives, yet they come to school ready to learn and grow academically, socially and emotionally.
Our school is in an urban neighborhood.
All of my students receive free breakfast and ninety percent get a free or reduced cost lunch. All of my students greatly rely on both the school and myself to provide them with not only the materials they need to learn at school, but also many things they need survive at home such as food and clothing.
Together we have formed a tight community that deeply cares for each other. We help each other become mathematicians, scientists, authors and super star readers. We also come together to help us all grow into responsible and caring human-beings.
My Project
My students are amazing, little human beings! They deal with a lot of stress at home as they live in an urban community that is not very affluent. They struggle with stress management and using calm-down strategies. It is hard enough to learn how to multiply fractions or write essays, but it is even harder when they walk in the door with a lot of baggage.
I want to further create a calm and safe environment in my classroom.
Tools like noise canceling headphones and fidgets will help them to focus on learning and feel calm and safe at school.
