My Students

First Grade is an important year of learning and development. Students start in September as emerging readers and leave in June reading fluently! While our students are diverse in their needs we all join together as a classroom community focused on learning and doing our best!

Our class is filled with 20 smart, energetic, and lively first grade students, who are constantly ON THE MOVE!

It is an inclusion classroom with students of varying strengths and abilities. Many students need movement breaks for alternate seating to maintain attention and focus throughout the day. In this class it is important for ALL students have the potential to be successful, no matter what!

My Project

Classroom organization is an important factor in student learning and growth. Students often need movement breaks and different seating choices in order to do their best learning. Our students spend a significant portion of their day reading independently, with partners and in small groups. Bean bag chairs, wobble cushions, and stools provide them with different options of where to sit to maintain focus and attention on their reading.

Providing flexible seating allows students to make a choice how and where they will do their best work each day.

As a first grade teacher it is important for students to be their own advocates on how they learn best. Providing them with opportunities for choice outside the "traditional" classroom seating options helps them take charge of their own learning.
