My Project
I have a classroom of eager and energetic kindergarteners! Our school serves a diverse population of students, which means students have a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. For some students, I am their first school experience, while other students have had access to preschool programs before coming to my classroom. By Spring, some students are reading above grade level while other students are still working to master letters and sounds. Each year, the background knowledge my students have when they enter my room affects what and how they learn.
It is my job to challenge my students to grow academically while providing developmentally appropriate activities for them to learn from and explore.
I strive to introduce vocabulary, topics, and activities that will broaden their knowledge base as well as provide opportunities for them to explore and learn independently.
I am requesting a class set of Scholastic "Let's Find Out" magazines. This resource provides eight months of magazines, containing four magazines for each month, for a total of 32 issues per student. These magazines are a wonderful way to introduce my students to non-fiction texts, enrich their vocabulary, and expose them to text features all while learning content that is grade-level appropriate. An added bonus is that this subscription comes with online access to additional content, such as videos and games for each issue related to the topic we are reading about, as well as an online version of the student magazine!
Exposing my students to text features and non-fiction text will enhance their background knowledge and help engage them in content. This is important for building vocabulary for all students, especially those who are multilingual learners.
