Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The wonderful kindergarten students I teach come from a variety of different homes in a heavily diverse, low income community. We are a unique transitional-language school that has students from all over the world attending, and at times, our students are learning both English and at-grade level material! Due to the fact that there is not always a common language spoken among the students and myself, the use of non-fiction magazines with lots of visual representations and online components is a MUST!
A Scholastic: Let's Find Out subscription is exactly what my ESL kindergarten students need!
My ESL students might happen to know about certain topics, yet cannot communicate that information to me. With the use of these nonfiction magazines, perhaps we can establish deeper Science and Social Studies learning connections. My students are my world, and I strive using all means possible to provide as much as I can for them in our classroom.
My Project
We imagine kindergarten as a time filled with lots of "once upon a time" stories and counting 1, 2, 3s. In kindergarten so much emphasis is placed on learning how to read, write, and numeracy. Those basics are SO fundamental for my students.
However, let's not forget how important SCIENCE and SOCIAL STUDIES are!
The best part about teaching Science and Social Studies is the ability to easily integrate that learning into the Reading and Math blocks of time.
