Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade students are always excited and eager to learn in spite of all the challenges they face each day at home and in school. My students are mostly native Spanish speakers and are always so excited about learning. The vast majority of the students I teach are on a free or reduced lunch program. The school in which I teach is located in New York and we have limited funds for supplies due to budget cuts. I can’t stress enough how energetic and excited my students are to learn and the need for materials that will challenge their enthusiasm at the varied reading and math levels.
My Project
In general, most of my students have had little life experiences: therefore, I feel that the lack of these experiences could be enhanced through non-fiction magazines. This approach will enable my students to learn about real life situations without the actual experience. The non-fiction magazines will be used each month to enhance the Common Core social studies and science curriculum. The children will work together in groups to explore the new topics introduced each month. Once we finish with the magazine children will be encouraged to bring it home and share the information learned with their families. I definitely know that these materials will expand their knowledge, improve their reading skills, and enhance their skills of working together. My request is urgent and important since the materials my students are working with are in poor condition and lack of relevance to their world today.
My students need non-fiction magazines that are on a first grade reading level.
This will greatly help them to successfully achieve and exceed the Common Core expectations set for their generation.
