Let's Fight Against Food Insecurity

Help me give my students access to healthy and nutritious foods to help alleviate hunger, reduce stress, and foster a conducive environment for learning.

My Project

My students are amazing and are learning how to show empathy for others. They acknowledge that some of their peers are experiencing food insecurity at home. Some of my students are also experiencing homelessness and living in foster homes. Childhood hunger significantly impacts mental health, potentially leading to long-term consequences like anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. Food insecurity can also cause chronic stress and negatively affect cognitive development, concentration, memory, and emotional regulation.

Over the last 5 years, I have successfully created a food pantry at my school that has provided food assistance for students and their families in extreme need.

Through my years of servicing others, many of my students began wanting to participate in helping to operate the school food pantry. They found this to be inspiring and were motivated to help make a difference in others' lives and by serving their community. My students will be assigned different job duties while working in the food pantry, which consist of unpackaging canned food items, sorting the food, organizing the pantry, tracking inventory, restocking shelves, maintaining an orderly, clean pantry, and distributing weekend meal backpacks.

My students want to make sure that students who are hungry in our school can have food to take from the pantry daily and for the holidays. Having a food pantry at my school with healthy food resources offers a vital support system for students by addressing food insecurity, a prevalent issue that can profoundly impact their well-being and academic performance. Several families rely on the food pantry to help feed their kids.
