it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In this poverty stricken neighborhood, few things excite and engage my students when it comes to academics, let alone reading. However, when my children are read to, something magical happens! Their eyes grow wide, their voices quiet and it seems they are entranced by the power of the story!
The students in my first grade class live in an extremely poor neighborhood of the NY.
While they are bright, sensitive children, they are faced with many challenges as a result of the home environments from which they come. My class consists of general education, English Language learners, and special needs students. The children in my class have very little academic support at home. In our Title 1 school, it is difficult for parents to buy food, clothing, and supplies for their children, let alone books.
My Project
Rarely are my students read to at home and therefore, they lack those cozy moments of sharing a story with others. However, when I read stories to and with them, a smile appears on their faces and they are absolutely engaged in the literature. The books I have read to the children this year have sparked real life conversations, debates and expression of opinions. The children find ways to relate to the characters in the stories and often the stories allow the students to share their own ideas and spark their imagination. I want my students to fall in love with stories and learn to truly love literature.
By providing my students with engaging and authentic texts and stories, they will be able to have debates, contemplate ideas, and connect to the characters and each other.
