My students need 10 subscriptions to each of 3 non-fiction magazines (The New York Times Upfront, Choices, and Scholastic Art) to increase their reading skills and to keep-up with current events that are relevant to them.

My Students
"Darkness does not drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." Martin Luther King
Each lesson in my classroom is tied to my students' future and present. I want them to be prepared for new adventures they will face after high school.
I teach English to juniors and seniors from diverse backgrounds and abilities with real world, high school problems and issues.
My students also have numerous strengths and positive attributes that just need to be tapped into, in order for them to unlock their full potential. A little effort and support will go a long way with my students, and as an educator, it is not just my job to teach them how to punctuate a sentence properly, but to prepare them for the future, no matter how diverse they may be. At the end of the day, my goal is to teach these eager learners life lessons that will follow them the rest of their days.
My Project
My students will be able to use the magazines for many different activities. Not only will these periodicals help to keep the students current with the events that are relevant to them and real world applicable, but they will also be able to use them in assessments where they can compare the non-fiction source with our current academic reading, whether it be a poem, short story, or novel, etc. Studies show that avid readers have a higher vocabulary and tend to be more highly functioning in social and academic settings. Considering the diversity of my students, chances are that many of them do not have access to magazines or newspapers, and some cannot tell you the current events affecting the world and their generation. That is where New York Times Upfront, Choices and Art magazines will be such an excellent tie to bind these students of such different backgrounds together, promoting teamwork, positive reinforcement, and encouragement.
Increasing the knowledge and self-esteem of my students is my biggest goal.
Test scores are important for state level, but as a classroom teacher, my goal is to make sure that when my students move on, they have found success in some area of their life, they can function in a society with a positive attitude, and they are proud of their achievements. Helping my students become better readers is one step in the right direction to ensure they are able to face the world head-on and with confidence.
