My students need high interest nonfiction texts to support the activities and projects they will be completing in our Being a Scientist and Environments and Habitats unit.
My students are full of energy, love to learn, and work hard to become productive school citizens within our school community. They are mostly below grade level and are placed in my class due to their difficulty with behaviors and emotions. They are from low income multicultural families with little stability of basic needs. The school day is the best part of their day and they have a desire to be at school!
In our classroom, we foster an environment where everyone is accepted for their individuality.
We all learn in different ways and at different times. Our students are autistic and/or have emotional disabilities that hinder their growth academically and socially. Each student is taught on their instructional level with support to aid in progressing and gaining academically. We also focus on interactions with others to increase our ability to work with groups and become positive role models for others.
Our students like to have fun in learning and experience new ideas and activities! They enjoy hands-on learning and technology infused projects. Thank you for helping us along our learning quest of new ideas and information!
My Project
My students need high quality nonfiction texts in science to aid in our learning through experiments and projects. Our first unit is focused on the scientific method and Being a Scientist. The students will learn the scientific method and how it is used in experiments. They will also explore different types of scientists and the fields they work in. Another unit focuses on Animals and Habitats. The texts in ecosystems will give specific examples with details to help students picture the environment. The texts with animals will give varied categories of animals and their specific structures in body and behaviors.
To bring our learning alive, we will engage in many experiments with the scientific method as our base and extending our learning into projects in conservation and how human activities effect the environment and the animals that live in these environments.
Students will identify real world dangers to the environment, and animals within the environment, to design and experiment with ideas of how to stop or reverse the damage done.
The texts will form a solid foundation for further learning and growing in our knowledge of animals, ecosystems, and how scientist in this area are working to make changes for a healthy environment for all who live there.
