My students need engaging art supplies, such as lanyard string, scissors, and sculpture wire, to help fuel their creativity and sense of exploration.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a very dense, urban immigrant community, my students are often balancing multiple lives simultaneously—that of school, home, and the neighborhood; that of American life, alongside their family's important cultural ties to their homelands.
The longer that I have had the privilege to work in such a community, the more I see the importance and necessity of providing my students with as many opportunities as I can for hands-on, exploratory opportunities that are hard to come by in such a densely populated neighborhood.
I love being able to take them out into the world, into nature, and to explore the environment that exists beyond the boundaries of our school's surrounding blocks. In the classroom, I try to continue this exploration by providing creative outlets that they usually can't access outside of school.
My Project
While some students excel in reading, writing, or math, other students may feel that same spark of confidence and excitement when doing something creative with their hands. As a teacher, it is my mission to find and provide that "spark" for every student who enters my classroom. These craft materials will provide my students with more opportunities to be creative and practice the types of craftsmanship that are simply not funded in a basic classroom. Without the support of people like you, a classroom's creative materials are either nonexistent or solely out of the teacher's pocket.
How can students discover creative passions without having materials to help them explore?
I hope to use these materials - among them lanyard string in all colors of the rainbow, an array of craft scissors, and colorful sculpture wire - to help provide more ways for my students to not only discover new types of creativity, but to discover new crafts that build their skill and engagement. These crafts will also give students alternative ways to interact with their peers and build positive friendships.
I plan to build in many opportunities to teach these crafts, with the aim of students gaining more independence, competence, and (most importantly) confidence as the year progresses.
