This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a low-income/high poverty school district nestled in the heart of Atlanta. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges and odds stacked against them, my students are always eager and attentive to learn. My students are creative, clever, and very spontaneous. They like to move, they love to read, and they love lots of positive attention and recognition. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
My students are not only hungry to learn but they are also hungry for a nutritional meal. Each morning I witness a group of hungry learners walk in the classroom. Looking not to the school as a place to feed their brain but, their stomach as well. Many of my students spend the night before missing a meal and being the adult in their home. It is very often students are laughed and talked about due to the magnifying noise of a growling stomach midway during a lesson. It becomes very scary to know that the meal students get at school could be their last meal of the day.
My learners are hungry nutritionally and academically.
I believe with the funding of this project may help eliminate one of the many hurdles they face everyday. When students are hungry it makes it difficult for them to focus, creates behavioral issues, and declines in them reaching their full potential. With things like snacks and beverages this project will be the first step in reaching my students holistically.
