Welcome to our classroom. I have the privilege of teaching 12 EMD students who are following the Occupational Course of Study career pathway. Students following this career pathway are learning to be independent, responsible adults. The skills we focus on are essential to adult life. The OCS students receive training in the areas of daily living skills, vocation, community involvement, and leisure activities. The Exceptional Children teachers have found that cooking is an easy way to combine all four training areas along with the basics of reading, math, and social skills. When we do a cooking activity, the students decide on the meal, prepare a shopping list and budget, visit the local grocery store, assign jobs, and then go to work preparing the meal. Each student takes part in the clean up as well. Although this is a fun activity for all involved, it is full of very valuable learning opportunities. The students do not see reading the recipe and following directions as a reading lesson. If we have to increase/decrease the recipe, we are adding a math lesson. Visiting the local grocery store and having a sit down meal allows us to work on social skills. The actual cooking allows the students to learn a variety of job related skills. Yes, it is fun, but lots of learning is taking place. Though Donors Choose, we have stocked our kitchen with cooking materials! Now, we would love to be able to add to our kitchen supplies. Having real plates, forks, and cups would be a great asset! Thank you in advance for your support.
