My Students
I teach children in one of the most expensive cities in the country. My students come from a variety of economic backgrounds in an increasingly crowded inner-city environment. Our 4th grade classrooms are routinely packed with 33 children, me, and a myriad of specialists who come in and out on a daily basis.
Many of my students come to school with a myriad of junk food snacks they have purchased for pennies at the corner store.
This stuff is what they eat during recess, and often chips and cheese puffs become their lunch.
It is a struggle teaching these kids to eat healthy food when we are competing with red,spicy,salty,sugary,crunchy,artificiality-
These kids deserve better.
My Project
Lately, I'm finding out, that instead of the school lunch, they are munching on a bag of Spicy Doritos until they are full.
Nobody sees this because they have "disguised" this unhealthy stuff and eaten it as their recess snack.
Sometimes parents are giving the kids lunch money, and they stop by the store before school to load up on junk. My students love doing hands-on activities and lots of group interaction, which takes a lot of brain power to focus and collaborate effectively with their classmates. However, they quickly lose focus because their brains are reeling from tons of sugar and artificial color!
