I teach Read 180 to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students and facilitate Virtual Spanish for seventh and eighth grade students. Our school has a very small population and we often get to know every student throughout the building. It's a very family-like atmosphere where everyone is there to support one another and to see that every student finds success. When they come to my classroom, it is my goal to help them be comfortable, to find something that interests them and to help them discover a love for reading and language.
My Project
In my room, students often work in collaborative groups several times a week during whole-group reading instruction. With whole-group instruction, students often pull their desks together and discuss and work with a variety of reading skills and strategies. Students create graphic organizers, charts and a variety of other visuals to show their understanding of stories and concepts being covered. I also facilitate Virtual Spanish where students also collaborate several times a week as they learn to communicate in a new language.
With new collaborative tables, students would easily be able to work together and collaborate on reading and language activities.
Our current desks don't allow students to easily form groups because the seats are connected to the desks.
Not only do I want students to leave my classroom better readers and speakers of a new language, but I also want them to enjoy reading and language. By creating a safe and engaging classroom, I think many of my students over the last twelve years have left at the end of the year knowing they have accomplished both goals.
