Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students intimately know all too well the challenges our community is facing due to COVID-19 and inflation. We are returning to school toward a new normal and navigating how to make our passion projects a reality and keep our families fed. My students are engaged, excited, and ready to roll up their sleeves and help rebuild our school community through service. Our classroom is a safe space to be who you are and to ask for what you need. Help us provide students with help without any shame for basic life necessities.

Our students have built and continue to maintain a community garden on campus for anyone to take what they need to eat.

One of the biggest reasons students try to come to school is because they don't have food or other basics to be healthy. Our garden not only helps to feed people on campus but also helps the students who maintain it to connect with the soil and the calm that comes from gardening. Our students are on a social-emotional journey coming back from COVID, and tangible projects such as our garden keep them working through setbacks and critical thinking issues, and you get food at the end! We are located in a food desert, and produce is very expensive for our families. We need new raised bed soil for the winter garden and to keep our garden growing all year round. Help us to teach students how to be backyard warriors, provide for themselves, and have a healthier and happier life in the future.
