Help me give my students the chance to be BILITERATE! Coming from homes that speak other languages than English, what an advantage they'll have if they can read in their home language and English! Support our English-learning families!
I would like to provide literacy support for our students who come from a home where English is not the dominant language. Research shows that supporting a student's first language literacy will improve and advance their literacy in their second language.
This project provides a bilingual library (leveled books with English and Spanish side-by-side) to our students for check out from the ESOL classroom.
Students will be able to continue or even begin to read in their native language.
Parents who only speak their home language will be able to come alongside their child and read with them, playing the expert role in their home language. What sweet times for them to share as a family! Many nonEnglish-speaking parents express concern over not being able to help their children with their English homework. This would give them the opportunity to actively contribute to their students' academic growth.
